MASSON, Jeffrey Moussaieff (1940-), anti-therapist. Masson was awarded a
Doctorate in Sanskrit by Harvard University, and was professor of Sanskrit at Toronto
University from 1970 to 1980. From 1970 he trained as an analyst at the Toronto
Psychoanalytic Institute, graduating to membership of the Psychoanalytic Association in
1978. In 1980 he was made Project Director of the Sigmund Freud archives but rapidly fell
out with Anna Freud over her father's alleged suppression of evidence of infantile
seduction, charges Masson laid in his book The Assault on Truth: Freud and Child Sexual
Abuse. His other books include The Oceanic Feeling: The Origins of Religious
Sentiment in Ancient India, A Dark Science: Women, Sexuality and Psychiatry in the
Nineteenth Century, The Complete Letters of Sigmund Freud to Wilhelm Fliess 1887-1904,
and Against Therapy (1989). He is partner to radical feminist Catharine Mackinnon.
