STRAWSON, P(eter) F(rederick) (1919- ), British philosopher, associated
with the movement known as ordinary language philosophy. Strawson was born in London and
educated at Christ College, University of Oxford. He returned to Oxford to teach and then
in 1968 was named Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy. Strawson's first book, Introduction
to Logical Theory (1952), contains his analysis of the relationship between formal
logic and the logical features of ordinary language. In his work Individuals (1959;
2d ed. 1965), Strawson makes persons and material objects the building blocks of all
knowledge.
