SCHMIDT, Alfred, (1931-), Social scientist, author of The Concept of
Nature in Marx (1962), which was written as a doctorate under Theodor Adorno and Max
Horkheimer between 1957 and 1960. Later Schmidt was to become chief assistant to Adorno
and lecturer in Philosophy at the Frankfurt University. Amongst his other works in English
are History and Structure: An Essay on Hegelian-Marxist and Structuralist Theories of
History (1971)
