OFFE, Claus (1940-), Sociologist. Born in
Berlin, Offe studied sociology, economics and philosophy in Koln
and at the Freie Universitat, Berlin. He held a Harkness
Fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley and at
Harvard University during 1969-71. He has held teaching posts in
Frankfurt, Konstanz, Vienna, Bielefield, Boston and Berkeley.
Offe wrote Industry and Inequality (1976),
Contradictions of the Welfare State (1984), Disorganized
Capitalism (1985).
